Chairman
Anthony Sim
After a successful career as a farmer, Anthony joined the Victorian Department of Agriculture in 1996 as an extension officer, later moving into project management. In the early 2000s, he began volunteering as a small business educator with Australian Business Volunteers in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and later Kenya. It was during these trips that he recognized the huge disparity in wealth and opportunities between people in Australia and those in developing countries.
His desire to help people in developing countries has grown into a passion.

In 2012, Anthony and his wife Annabel visited Upendo Home in Moshi, Tanzania, and saw the transformative impact of Upendo on the lives of the children. They resolved to get involved with the Australian Upendo team.
Accepting the role of Chairman in 2015, Anthony has strived to ensure that both the Tanzanian NGO and the Australian charity fully comply with local rules and regulations. He brings high ethical values and strong business experience to the organization.

John Welford
Born in Nairobi in 1946. His mother was a Scots South African from Cape Town. His father was English, from Lymm in Cheshire. They met in December 1943, in Nairobi during World War 2 and married, 2 weeks later, in January 1944.

John and his brother Geoff, were brought up on farms in Kenya but John spent seven years in England at school and at Uni. They both gained Science degrees and later became teachers.

John went back to Kenya at the end of 1968. He was given a job teaching Maths and Science at a Prep School in Kenya and did that for 8 years at two different boarding schools.

When he arrived in Australia, John had no teaching qualification, so he spent the next five years tuning cars, having bought the franchise for Geelong from Home Tune.

In 1981, he went back to teaching, gaining a post at Geelong Grammar School and spent the next 20 years teaching at GGS, including 15 years at Timbertop, Geelong Grammar’s Year 9 campus near Mount Buller. It was an outdoor, physical life which he very much enjoyed. Only one other person has taught continuously at Timbertop for longer than John has and that was his wife, Gaye.

Since leaving Geelong Grammar he has worked part time at local Ballarat schools and become a mentor for troubled kids including two with Asperger’s syndrome.

John has also become a leader and facilitator for the Pathways Foundation which ran contemporary Rites of Passage camps for teenage boys and their fathers or significant male mentors and the Victorian camps were run on his property, in the bush south of Ballarat where he lives with his wife, Gaye, and Jim, a young Collie dog. In his spare time, he still teaches sailing with Sailability in Ballarat, and he drives a ‘hot’ 52-year-old Peugeot 504 in rallies and autocrosses for fun.
